Less than a week after being given the role of Critic for Seniors’ Affairs, North Island – Powell River MP Rachel Blaney calls on the Liberal government to help seniors who have lost their Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS) because they received supports in the event of a pandemic.

“There are a lot of seniors in our country and in our riding who are going to lose their Guaranteed Income Supplement very soon if they haven’t already lost it. They are very worried that they will not have a place to live and that they will be able to afford basic necessities, ”said Blaney.

“We have a lot of working seniors who have applied for CRB or CERB. They went through the Canada Revenue Agency and are having problems that people who applied through Service Canada are not, ”she said.

Blaney and Employment and Workforce Development Critic Daniel Blaikie sent a letter to Ministers Kamal Khera (Minister of Seniors), Diane Lebouthillier (Minister of National Revenue) and Carla Qualtrough (Minister of Employment, Workforce Development and Disability Inclusion) calling for immediate action on this issue.

The NDP also called on the government to tackle the problem in August, but “instead of taking action to help low-income seniors and support Canadians during a pandemic, Justin Trudeau chose to call a snap election. for the government’s own political gain ”. says the NDP press release.

“Wasn’t it enough for the Liberals to drag their feet to get financial support for seniors at the start of the pandemic? Now they are trying to recoup some of the support that was really given to older people in need, ”said Blaikie. “As the Liberals rush to give money to the richest companies without any strings attached, they are nickel and dime seniors. It’s just not good enough.

“Seniors have had to endure a lot during this pandemic, from poor living conditions in long-term care homes to being more vulnerable to COVID-19. Today, some of Canada’s most vulnerable low-income seniors have lost the GIS assistance they relied on simply to follow government advice, ”said NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh. “The Liberal government cannot abandon our seniors like this. We urge Justin Trudeau to act immediately and ensure that Canadian seniors get the help they need.
